Junior Team Tennis begin its second season of second year this May. JTT is a USTA product designed to acclimate young tennis players ages 18 and below to team competition ending in a State Championship in July in Sumter. Kids, beginner through intermediate, will be broken into age groups to compete as Boys Singles, Girls Singles, Boys Doubles, Girls Doubles, and Mixed Doubles in an 8 game pro-set format, total games won determine match for team. Traditionally, teams form from Beaufort. Bluffton (High School), and Hilton Head (Long Cove, Rec. Center, Palmetto Dunes and Wexford). Last season 60 children participated in the league, which is the county’s largest Junior program, with Wexford winning the honor of representing in Sumter. Coach list includes; David Riedmayer, Patrick Mason, Scot Nichols, Robert Brown, Cameron Everett, and Jackie Reynecke.

USTA Membership is required at a special Junior rate and a team fee is paid to include professional training, weekend matches, balls, and team t-shirt. This program is an ideal way to keep high school teams active during off periods as well as introduce rising stars to team chemistry and camaraderie. It is also a great springboard into summer tournaments. For more information contact your local pro or League Coordinator Robert Brown at 290-2833 or go to SCtennis.com.

Robert Brown, founder of the Bluffton Today Open Tennis Tournament, announces with pleasure that local business Ward Edwards has joined on as a BTO corporate sponsor. The company has generously offered matching funds up to $500 for Bluffton juniors who will be playing a tennis marathon on the Saturday night of the tournament trying to raise money for underprivileged Bluffton children interested in tennis. The fund raiser within a fund raiser is set up similar to a walk-a-thon where kids will be looking to solicit sponsors who will pay per game, set or hour. These funds, held separate from the tournament proceeds which go into refurbishing and creating new courts at the Rec and Bluffton High, will go directly to children in need of equipment, entry fees, lessons and clinics. “I will provide the kids for prospective sponsors who might not know any players,” said Brown.

We’re about a month away from the entry deadline so grab the tournament application and sign up! Tons of events on tap, from men’s, women’s, and junior division play to a pro exhibition, player party, and all-night tennis marathon. Proceeds benefit Bluffton junior tennis programs and help fund public court repairs.
